MEDECOS meetings provide a global stage for researchers who study Mediterranean-type ecosystems, whether their interests lie in the conservation, restoration or management of species, populations or ecosystems. The meetings, hosted every 3-4 years, play a critical role in showcasing research advances, promoting discussion and facilitating collaborative research. Given that Mediterranean-type ecosystems are amongst the most threatened in the world, these meetings are pivotal to increase our understanding and protection of these unique ecosystems.

While large international meetings commonly host a series of concurrent sessions and formal presentations that can at times be overwhelming, MEDECOS meetings are moderate in size and provide ample opportunities for discussion and networking. The environment is also conducive for participation of our future researchers - young scientists and students who will continue Mediterranean-type ecosystem research. The organising committee for MEDECOS XI hopes to encourage greater participation from our young scientists and students through the presentation of student awards.

MEDECOS meetings have typically explored a particular topic. MEDECOS XI aims instead, to accommodate as many interests as possible. Thus, the meeting will host an array of topics of current research and global interest that will form the conference themes.   A preliminary list of themes to be addressed will include:

1. Defining a Mediterranean Ecosystem
2. Species and Population Ecology
3. Landscape Ecology
4. Socio-Cultural Dimensions
5. Global Change
6. Disturbance Ecology
7. Invasive Species
8. Ecophysiology
9. Conservation of Threatened Species
10.Conservation of Ecosystems
11. Restoration Ecology

MEDECOS XI will immediately precede Seed Ecology II - The 2nd International Society for Seed Science Meeting and both meetings will share a conference field trip.  For those with an interest in both fields, the format provides an opportunity to attend both meetings.

The MEDECOS XI Conference Organising Committee is committed to hosting as environmentally friendly a conference as possible and seeks your support to ensure a low conference footprint is achieved. To help you (and the organisers) achieve this goal please view a few initiatives we are hoping delegates will support prior to and ensuing the conference.

The organising committee looks forward to your attendance at MEDECOS XI.
