This information should help you in
getting to the conference venue, the welcome reception at Kings Park
and Botanic Garden, and around the Perth CBD.
Getting to the Conference Venue
The conference venue - The University Club - is located
off Hackett Drive, on the grounds of the University of Western Australia
(UWA). UWA is conveniently located on the foreshore of the Swan River
in the suburb of Crawley, just southwest of the large green area of
Kings Park and Botanic Garden (refer to map http://www.hot-maps.de/oceania/australia/western_australia/perth/homeen.html).
Given that Kings Park and Botanic Garden is located directly adjacent
to the Perth CBD, the conference venue is only 2-3km southwest of
the Perth CBD.
Getting to the conference venue at UWA from the Perth CBD is easy!
Buses (Numbers 23, 78, 102 and 107)
travel frequently between the Perth CBD and UWA via Mounts Bay Road,
which follows the foreshore of the Swan River at the base of the southern
side of Kings Park and Botanic Garden. The most convenient bus stop
for the University Club is located at the corner of Mounts Bay Road
and Hackett Drive – this is the bus stop where most UWA students
exit the bus. From the Perth CBD, Number 23 departs
from the Transperth Esplanade Busport and Numbers
78, 102 and 107 depart from the Wellington Street
Bus Station. All four bus routes are convenient if your accommodation
is within the Perth CBD, because the buses frequently stop at a number
of locations within the Perth CBD. If interested, bus route numbers
102 and 107, after stopping at UWA, then continue their journey to
the coast, namely to Cottesloe Beach.
An alternative bus route, for your travel to UWA from the Perth CBD,
is on the buses that travel north of Kings Park and Botanic Garden,
before heading south towards UWA (Numbers 24 and 25).
Again, the most convenient bus stop for the University Club is located
at the corner of Mounts Bay Road and Hackett Drive. These two buses
depart East Perth and travel along the main Terraces within
the Perth CBD – St Georges and Adelaide Terraces. These
would be an option if you have selected accommodation that is north
or west of Kings Park and Botanic Garden e.g. accommodation in the
suburbs of West Perth or Subiaco. Also, if your accommodation is located
along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces, you can catch either bus,
in addition to some of the bus numbers mentioned in the previous paragraph.
To download maps and timetables for
these bus routes, please visit http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au.
Download the map and timetable for Western 45 (Bus
numbers 23, 78, 102 and 107) or Western 44 (Bus numbers
24 and 25).
The next alternative is to catch a taxi/cab. While
the bus fare between the conference venue and the Perth CBD is Au$2.10
(the Concession/Pensioner/Student fee of Au$1.30 may not apply for
non-Western Australian residents), taxi/cab rides are costlier at
>Au$10.00 for a 2-3km taxi/cab ride.
Getting to the Welcome Reception
at Aspects of Kings Park
on Sunday 2 September 2007
Aspects of Kings Park – a showcase gallery - is located off
Fraser Avenue, the main vista of Kings Park that provides the striking
view of the Perth City Skyline and the Swan River. It is a view that
few people forget. Aspects is centrally located along this Avenue,
amongst the award-winning Frasers restaurant, kiosk, floral clock
and war memorials. Please refer to the map at http://www.bgpa.wa.gov.au/kingspark/maps_venues_fraserav.html?Menu=kingspark&Sub=maps
. You can’t miss it!
If your accommodation is in the Perth CBD, you can hop onto Transperth
buses (Bus Numbers 37, 24 or 103) for a free
ride up to Kings Park and Botanic Garden. The buses travel
along the main Perth CBD Terraces (St Georges and Adelaide Terraces).
See the section below on GETTING AROUND THE PERTH CBD to find out
more about the ‘free area transport zone’ and routes.
If you catch Bus Number 37, just sit back and relax - the bus will
cease its route in the main carpark of Kings Park, directly behind
Aspects. If you catch the 24 and 103 buses, ask the bus driver to
make the stop at Kings Park, near Fraser Avenue. You will need to
walk the 500m to Aspects along Fraser Avenue. This is a walk you will
not regret, as you take in the wonderful view of the Perth City skyline
and Swan River.
Alternatively, you can catch a taxi/cab. The ride
may cost you Au$6.00 -$10.00 for a 2km trip.
The last alternative, and one that many people take, is to walk up
to Kings Park from the Perth CBD. Depending on where your accommodation
is, the walk may take you 15 – 40 minutes. Be warned, it is
uphill for the last 300m before you reach Kings Park.
GETTING AROUND THE PERTH CBD
Within the Perth CBD, travel is also easy – the public transport
is free. You can hop on any bus and travel for free within a given
radius from the Perth CBD. Unfortunately, as indicated by the bus
fare above, the free zone doesn’t extend as far as UWA.
For free public transport within the Perth CBD, you can either catch
one of the three Central Area Transit (CAT) buses
OR any of the Transperth buses.
CAT Buses - Each of the three CAT buses (Blue CAT,
Red CAT, Yellow CAT) follows a particular route (please refer to the
map http://www.countrywide.com.au/img/maps/citymap.gif).
The Blue CAT south/north route journeys near the
accommodation along Mounts Bay Road and then travels through the Perth
CBD before it heads into the entertainment and cultural precinct of
Northbridge.
The Red and Yellow CAT west/east routes cover the
length of the Perth CBD, taking you between West Perth and East Perth.
The CAT buses generally travel the routes that are not catered for
by the standard Transperth buses.
Transperth Buses – You can travel on any of
the standard Transperth buses (that are all-over green) anywhere within
the Perth CBD. Given that the CAT buses don’t travel along the
main Perth CBD Terraces (St Georges and Adelaide Terraces), the Transperth
buses are particularly useful if your accommodation is located on
or near St Georges and Adelaide Terraces. For example, along the Terraces,
you can hop onto Bus Numbers 37, 24 or 103 for a free ride
up to Kings Park and Botanic Garden.
